UNANIMA Update

Sr. Margaret Scott, acj was recently named the Secretary/Treasurer for the Executive Committee of UNANIMA International, an NGO at the United Nations, based in New York. UNANIMA is an organization made up of 22 congregations of Roman Catholic Sisters. These sisters work in approximately 80 different countries and they advocate on behalf of women and children living in poverty, immigrants and refugees, and the environment. The sisters bring their constituents’ voices and concerns to the United Nations. Handmaids Elect New Superior General

Sister Rosario Fernandez-Villaran has recently been elected Superior General of the Handmaids of the Sacred Heart of Jesus at the General Congregation XX. Among those in attendance at the meetings were Handmaids from the USA Province, Sisters Belen Escauriaza, Sagrario Nunez, and Margaret Scott. For her leadership as the outgoing Superior General, Sister Inmaculada Fukasawa was given the heartfelt appreciation of the Congregation, along with tokens of gratitude and affection. We wish God’s continued blessings and guidance for Sister Rosario Fernandez-Villaran as she assumes her new leadership post.

Sister Catherine Kirwan-Avila Professes First Vows

Sister Catherine Kirwan-Avila made her first profession as a Handmaid of the Sacred Heart of Jesus on Saturday, January 14, in Wyncote, PA. The Mass was celebrated by Jesuit Father Daniel Joyce of St. Joseph University in Philadelphia. Deacon Kevin McCarthy of the Diocese of Springfield, MA served at the Mass and proclaimed the Gospel. Deacon McCarthy taught Sister Catherine when she was in the 11th grade at Cathedral High School in Springfield. Along with the Handmaids of the Sacred Heart of Jesus, also attending were many people from western Massachusetts, including several high school classmates and many family members….
