Sister Lyan Tri, acj, Newly Professed Handmaid Arrives in the United States

Sr-1-Lyan-001Sister Inmaculada Fukasawa, General Superior of the Handmaid Congregation has missioned Sister Lyan Tri for several years to our USA Province.  Sr. Lyan was a geology major in her home country, Vietnam. After entering the Handmaids there, she was sent to Manila, the Philippines, for her formative years. There she pursued her M.A in pastoral ministry, majoring in spirituality and giving retreats before doing her preparation for final vows in Rome in 2010 with fifteen Handmaids from nine countries.

Sister Lyan made her final profession of vows in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam with two other Vietnamese sisters on October 2, 2010.  Twenty five priests concelebrated the joyous liturgy, which was attended by hundreds of family members and friends. The liturgy was also difficult to keep from the Communist governments notice. She began full time ministry as a professed Handmaid with responsibilities for the girls dormitory at the Handmaids residence in Ho Chi Minh City, for giving retreats and days of prayer and for vocation ministry (which cannot be advertised the way we advertise in the US). She also taught in language centers and at the university level.

Sister Lyan arrived in the United States in October and became part of the STEM lab team (a learning lab for Science, Technology, Electronics, and Mathematics) at Ancillae-Assumpta Academy. Recently, Sister Lyan had this to say about becoming part of the USA Province: I'm impressed by the spirit of openness and respect for others' differences, of respect for human dignity and life, of being concerned for social needs and problems. I'm happy and surprised that I can talk about Christian values to anyone and not be afraid of being considered 'strange'!
