ATHENS SR. ANGELA

Mission Statement

The mission of the Handmaids of the Sacred Heart of Jesus is Reparation. As Eucharistic women, we work with Christ to bring healing to people’s hearts and peace to their relationships with God, with one another, and with creation. The core values that define a Handmaid are Joy, Hospitality, Simplicity, Humility, and Compassion. In 1877 Saint Raphaela Mary described the mission of the Handmaids as “Love of Christ in the Eucharist and the concern of His Heart for the salvation of all.”

Vision Statement

An international community of women, the Handmaids of the Sacred Heart of Jesus celebrate God’s unconditional love with a passion for wholeness, peace, and reconciliation. In the United States, we rejoice in the gift that is ours to be interracial and multicultural in membership. Prayerfully present in our world struggling for integrity and wounded by sin and selfishness, we know we are called to collaborate in the redemptive mission of Jesus. Our communities have the Eucharist at their center. We are constantly challenged by the demands of celebrating the Lord’s supper and are empowered by the experience of breaking bread together. We commit ourselves to: nurture faith development; approach the world with hope and hospitality; reverence the integrity of creation; celebrate diversity; side with the poor; act as leaven for community building; and share all that we are and have. Our ministry is education in the service of the gospel. Whatever educates invites our collaboration. Inspired by Saint Raphaela Mary, our Foundress, we strive to find God in all things and to respond as Mary did, with a courageous and creative FIAT – let it happen – to God’s compassionate plan for the universe.
