Miami Community

In 1975 the Handmaids of the Sacred Heart arrived in the Miami area in response to the needs of the local Church. The Sisters served in a variety of ministries according to the gifts which they had at the time. Throughout the years the Sisters have engaged in:
  • education (parish, school)
  • work with children, adults, seniors
  • catechesis
  • supportive presence for new immigrants
  • legal filings on behalf of immigrants
  • homeless outreach
  • retreats and prayer days
  • sacramental preparation
  • Evangelization
  • Support services to separated/divorced and bereaved
  • Young adult and campus ministry
  • Project FIAT International (a Catholic Missionary expedition to Central America to serve in a deprived area).

The Lord, placed on our altar

Our chapel holds our most important resident... Jesus in the Eucharist.

young women in adoration ACJ ASSOCIATES in Miami are a lay covenant community with Handmaids of the Sacred Heart of Jesus. The Associates share in the ACJ rich charism of reparation/reconciliation centered on the fullest dimensions of Eucharist. They meet monthly at the Sisters' residence in order to deepen their faith life and to form a community of loving interdependence with women in religious life.

Our neighbors are always welcome in our chapel to greet Jesus in adoration, in our communal prayers, or in private devotion.  Here, two friends adore Christ in our chapel.

In 2000, we were delighted to celebrate the 150th birthday of our foundress, St. Rafaela María Porras.  In Miami, we were honored to hear the wisdom of Bishop Román.  Here, he speaks from the beautiful Ermita de la Caridad.

Bishop Roman

  Mass in la Ermita

How blessed we are to have so many wonderful friends!  Miami is so beautiful in its diversity -- we hear Creole, French, English, Spanish, Portuguese, and many other languages spoken in our streets and parishes.

The Ermita, a Miami landmark, is dedicated to Our Lady of Charity of Cobre, the patroness of Cuba.  The words inscribed on the walls speak to our identity as Handmaids (Esclavas): "he aqui la esclava del Señor..."  What better place to celebrate being part of our Miami community as servants of the Lord?

Handmaids and the BishopSister Sagrario, Bishop Román, and Sisters Gloria, Asunta, Dorothy, Irene, Mary Ann, and Kayjoy enjoy the celebration of our foundress.  A Cuban priest, joined by Sisters from Spain, Vietnam, Argentina, and the United States... St. Rafaela María's love for the diverse peoples of the world is definitely a reality here in the US province!
